Director of Development
The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has a three-part mission to conduct interdisciplinary research in coastal ocean and estuarine science, educate students and citizens, and provide advisory service to policy makers, industry, and the public. The School of Marine Science (SMS) at VIMS is the graduate school in marine science for the College of William & Mary. Chartered in 1940, VIMS is currently among the largest marine research and education centers in the United States. VIMS employs approximately 60 full-time faculty members, more than 250 staff, and enrolls approximately 100 graduate students in master’s and doctoral programs. VIMS consists of four collaborative, interdisciplinary academic departments: Biological Sciences, Environmental and Aquatic Animal Health, Fisheries Science and Physical Sciences. The Virginia Institute of Marine Science and the College of William & Mary invites applications for a Director of Development. The position holds a dual reporting relationship to the Dean and Director of VIMS and the Associate Vice President for Development at William & Mary; however, the position will reside at the VIMS campus. Anticipated start date for the position is no later than Summer 2014. This is an exciting time for VIMS and the College of William & Mary, as in 2015, VIMS will celebrate its 75th anniversary.
Responsibilities: The Director serves as the leader and central executor for all advancement activity for the benefit of VIMS, for building a strong culture of engagement and philanthropy, and for contributing to and executing a strategic vision for the advancement operations. The Director serves as the chief fundraiser for VIMS and is responsible for soliciting gifts from alumni, individuals, and corporations and foundations from the $50,000 + level. As part of the VIMS leadership team, the Director is also responsible for high-level management of the VIMS Foundation, specifically serving as the Executive Director, and the VIMS Advisory Council. The Director also needs to be keenly focused on pipeline development and the moves management process of donors.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will hold an earned bachelor’s degree and a minimum of seven years of experience in increasingly more responsible roles in development/advancement. There must be demonstrated ability to plan, execute, and close significant major gifts, a track record of successful gift solicitations at the major gift level (minimum $50,000), hold experience working with lead volunteers, and the ability to perform and motivate a team in a metrics driven environment. VIMS and the College prefer candidates to hold an advanced degree and experience working in higher education administration. Additionally, past performance as the strategist for significant gifts at the individual level and from corporate and foundation partners, and experience working with leadership and foundation boards and campaigns.
