Associate or Full Professor
Senior Scientist with Research Expertise in Complementary and Alternative/Integrative Medicine.

The Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. The Department invites applications for a tenured, senior faculty position to become Director of a new Center of Excellence in Complementary and Alternative / Integrative Medicine (CAM/IM) Research. The successful candidate will: (a) establish a Center of Excellence on CAM/IM Research within the UCSD Center for Integrative Medicine (CIM); (b) develop a robust research infrastructure to increase interactions among researchers and enhance collaborative CAM/IM research projects; (c) take a leadership role in forging relationships with other academic departments and institutes at UCSD, including the UCSD Clinical and Translational Research Institute, the Stein Institute for Research on Aging, and the Moores UCSD Cancer Center, as well as other local institutions including the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS) and San Diego State University, in order to enhance the visibility and effectiveness of CAM/IM research; and (d) place high priority on developing and disseminating CAM/IM educational programs within the UCSD CIM as well as within other UCSD institutes. Candidates should have a PhD or MD with a proven track record in obtaining NIH (NCCAM or comparable) funding and high productivity with regards to peer-reviewed publications. Candidates whose research is designed to impact on clinical practice and/or public health are especially sought. Successful applicants should place high priority on teaching undergraduate and graduate students in public health as well as medical students and mentoring the next generation of investigators. Rank and series of appointment will be based on skills and qualifications of the candidate, but preference is to make the appointment at the full professor level, which will be a tenured position with partial state funding.

The UCSD CIM, a member of the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine (CAHCIM), is 3 years old and is steadily building its clinical, educational, community partnership and research activities. Practice-based research potential is enhanced by UCSD’s now universally deployed EMR – EPIC. Participants from several UCSD departments on CIM’s Research Committee have already resulted in submissions of 2 major NIH grant applications. There is also a substantial donor gift fund that will yield annual internal funding for pilot projects within a few years.

The Department of Family and Preventive Medicine (FPM) is newly under the leadership of Dr. Bess Marcus and is in a growth phase. In addition to family and preventive medicine, FPM houses public health research and education for UCSD. The department is interested in candidates who have demonstrated commitment to excellence by providing leadership in research, teaching, and service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.
