Dir Diversity & Community/Dir of Hiring
University Prep, an independent day school for students in grades 6-12 located in an urban residential section of Seattle, is seeking a new Director of Diversity and Community/Director of Hiring starting July 1, 2018. The Director of Diversity and Community/Director of Hiring is a critical and senior-level position in a school community that is deeply invested in the work of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice. The Director sits on the Administrative Team and Academic Council, co-chairs a Board committee, attends Board meetings retreats, and directs the Office of Diversity and Community. This position reports to the Assistant Head of School who is also Director of the Upper School and meets regularly with the Head of School.

The Office of Diversity and Community is led by the Director and includes four other faculty/staff members:
" Associate Director of Diversity and Community, a full-time position in the office that currently serves as a point person for the Middle School.
" Assistant Director of Diversity and Community, a current faculty member who has a quarter-time position in the office.
" Community Manager, a full-time and recently-created position in the office that partners with internal and external community members.
" Community Service Coordinator.

The Director supervises the team's work and manages an extensive budget. The office is currently located at the heart of the school (next to the dining commons) and provides a comfortable space, resources, and support for faculty, staff, parents, and, most importantly, students.

The current Director of Diversity and Community/Director of Hiring, Shavette McGhee, has been in the position for six years and has lead the community with great verve, warmth, and much success. She will be moving into the Director of Enrollment Management role this summer and will be an important partner and resource for the new Director.

Currently, the priorities for Director of Diversity and Community/Director of Hiring are to:
" Oversee and coordinate the implementation of newly adopted Diversity Strategic Plan. The scope of the plan requires a strong partnership and collaboration with stakeholders from throughout the community. The plan aligns with the vision and mission of UPrep.
" Continue to support and encourage students while connecting them to leadership and growth opportunities. From supporting Middle School affinity groups to conducting workshops at Social Justice Days, from advocating for parental leave for men to helping the history department revise the U.S. history curriculum, UPrep students have strong and persuasive voices in the community.
" Direct, collaborate with, and support the professional growth of the Office of Diversity and Community team.
" Continue to refine and improve UPrep's recruitment hiring processes of a diverse faculty and staff and to ensure consistent and effective hiring and onboarding processes.
" Continue to seek partnerships with Seattle-area organizations and schools in order to strengthen and increase community engagement.

Key Responsibilities also include:
" Integrating cultural competency in every aspect of school life and at all levels of school functions, including policy-making decisions, administrative functions, curriculum development, and all support services.
" Developing school-wide education and training in the area of cultural competency from the Board level through the parent body, and including faculty, staff, and students.
" In consultation with the Division Directors and the Academic Dean, designing and implementing faculty and staff professional development relating to matters of Diversity and Community.
" Working with the Academic Dean and the Instructional Leadership Team to develop and deliver a multicultural curriculum.
" Working closely with admission and enrollment office on outreach, recruitment, retention, and support of underrepresented students and families.
" Maintaining and developing relationships throughout the year with families who are underrepresented and finding ways to support and engage them in the life of the school.
" Collaborating with the Academic Dean, the Associate Director of Diversity and Community, and the Learning Resource Coordinator in serving students whose own first language or whose family's first language is not English or who might have other language-based challenges and works with these families to identify their particular needs regarding interpretive services for events and communications.
" In conjunction with the Associate and Assistant Directors of Diversity and Community, planning and coordinating student programming on and off campus, e.g., NAIS SDLC, NWAIS SDLC, Social Justice Day, MLK Day, Cultural Night, etc.
" Working with the Parent Council President to lead the Board Diversity and Community Committee, working with the Committee to look for ways to engage the community in strategic ways, and overseeing and executing the NAIS Assessment of Inclusivity and Multiculturalism (AIM) survey for the community.

Qualities and Qualifications
" Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university required.
" Master's degree preferred.
" 3+ years' experience in school environment required.
" Genuine enthusiasm for and experience with Middle and Upper School students.
" Knowledge of best practices in equity and inclusion work.
" A deeply held commitment to equity and inclusion on behalf of faculty, staff, students, and families.
" Demonstrated experience presenting/leading equity education programming.
" Ability to teach, persuade, build trust, and establish credibility.
" Ability to affect change collaboratively and empathetically.
" Highly effective written and verbal communication skills.
" Thoughtful listener, who listens to understand.
" Strong technology skills.
