University of Massachusetts Medical School
Worcester, MA
The Program in Molecular Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) seeks a distinguished, transformational scholar and leader to serve as the next Chair. The Program, led since 1989 by biochemist Michael Czech, PhD, has generated scientific breakthroughs in RNA-mediated gene regulation, gene therapy, autoimmunity research, neurology, and other fields, and has been the foundation for a number of the medical school's most important basic research departments and institutes. Its faculty members include six Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigators, four members of the National Academy of Sciences, one member of the National Academy of Medicine, a Breakthrough Prize and Lasker Award recipient, a fellow of the Royal Society, and a Nobel laureate. These and other scholars have made UMMS a recognized leader in basic and translational research investigating some of the most daunting and urgent problems of our time.
The Program in Molecular Medicine operates as a fully functioning, independent department with 25 primary faculty tenured through the Program and 15 joint appointment faculty. The Program Chair is a member of the senior leadership of UMMS and reports to the Dean of the School of Medicine, Provost, and Executive Deputy Chancellor, Terence “Terry” Flotte, MD. The Chair will be responsible for the comprehensive leadership, management, and stewardship of PMM's mission and the cultivation and expansion of its resources, human capital, and impact. To that end, the Chair will allocate resources to maintain standards of excellence in the Program's enterprises across academic research, teaching, and clinical and translational activities.
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of visionary leadership, strategic thinking, and effective planning in a collaborative, consensus-driven environment and the ability to coalesce other scholars around shared ideas in the basic, translational, and clinical sciences.
