The Creative Producing and Management Program in the School of Theater at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) invites applications for a full time producing faculty position to begin in the fall of 2019. The Producing Program at CalArts is one of the foremost programs in the United States with a specialized curriculum and a shared ethos for rigorous practical training, theoretical inquiry, hands-on production and aesthetic reflection. Duties:
The Producing Instructor will teach producing to MFA producers in the Creative Producing and Management Program. The role will also involve overseeing the producing of School of Theater productions and participating in the multiple practical tasks of mounting a season: budgeting, marketing, artist engagement, rights acquisition, etc.

Important: This position will also involve a concomitant significant producing role in the CalArts Center for New Performance (CNP). The precise CNP title/role will be determined by the specific qualifications/aspirations of the selected candidate, as the teaching role will have primacy. The practical producing environment of CNP is a significant component of the learning experience of the CalArts MFA Producing student and is leveraged to be rigorously professional in all aspects.

Mentorship of students is the cornerstone of CalArts. Even though each student is assigned to one specific mentor, it is the responsibility of the faculty to advise any student in the School of Theater if they have the knowledge or expertise that the student requires.

Responsibilities include:
• Class preparation, classroom instruction and grading.
• Significant student mentoring, providing mentor reports at the end of each year.
• Attending faculty meetings as scheduled throughout the year.
• Participation in reviews at the end of each semester and providing written evaluations for each of the students.
• Maintain a professional practice.
• Work with the Dean’s office to develop and execute contracts for visiting artists, guest directors, designers, performers, and other necessary paid personnel.
• Negotiate and secure rights, permissions and royalties to produce School Of Theater productions
• Develop, assist and participate in recruitment activity as determined by the Dean’s office
• Committee Service.
• Various other duties, as assigned by the Program Director and the Dean’s Office.

Requirements:
The ideal candidate is a producer with a strong professional practice, a firm commitment to teaching, dedication to working with a culturally, economically and intellectually diverse community of artists, and a demonstrated skill and passion for working with artists in the early stages of their training.

The following qualifications are essential for a successful candidate:
• Knowledge and experience of a variety of different producing models for live performance as well as a vested interest in how to engage and develop experimental performance practices.
• Significant professional experience and stature in the producing of live performance.
• Effective leadership and organizational skills.
