Position Summary: The Michigan State University Honors College is a community of approximately 4,000 bright, academically talented undergraduate students who pursue and achieve academic excellence through active, innovative learning. Promoting the intimacy of a small college atmosphere on the campus of one of the world's leading research universities, the Honors College attracts the highest caliber students from across the country to MSU and produces highly successful graduates. There are more than 18,000 MSU Honors College graduates who are leaders in their fields and making meaningful contributions within their communities and around the world. The Honors College is seeking a creative, energetic individual to serve as Alumni Relations Coordinator to build and nurture relationships with alumni across the U.S. and abroad. The Alumni Relations Coordinator will conceptualize, implement and evaluate the alumni activities for the Honors College.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Director of Development and the Dean of the Honors College, this position will:

• Provide support for alumni communities and individuals seeking a deeper connection with the Honors College and Michigan State University’s educational mission. Build an alumni board and assist the alumni board with strategies to increase engagement with and financial support to fulfill the goals and initiatives of the college.
• Develop innovative opportunities that engage alumni with an inclination to support the institution philanthropically. Participate in alumni volunteer prospecting and stewardship; develop and maintain collaboration with the Director of Development, as well as respective regional fundraisers and college advancement staff to advance alumni engagement efforts in designated markets.
• Develop and implement programs, initiatives and structures to build relationships with alumni across the U.S. and abroad; Arrange and coordinate: (1) regional meetings with Honors College and MSU alumni; (2) alumni visits to campus and interaction with HC members and the MSU community; (3) opportunities for a variety of key constituencies to interact with the college regularly; (4) plan, coordinate and attend alumni activities
• Oversee and manage the activities and engagement of the Dean’s Ambassadors, a group of approximately 20 highly motivated and outstanding Honors College students who interact with alumni and donors throughout the year.
• Collaborate with the Honors College communication coordinator to prepare, edit and disseminate communications with Honors College alumni and donors, including but not limited to newsletters, magazines and other media/outlets
• Serve as Honors College liaison to central Alumni Relations

Travel related to alumni activities is associated with this position.


Unit Specific Education/Experience: Knowledge normally acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in business, public relations, communications, marketing, or a related field; 1-3 years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in planning and production in higher education fundraising, event coordination, public speaking; or, equivalent combination of education and experience; experience in strategic planning and program marketing and promotion, special event planning, event coordination, volunteer management, multi-project management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to use word processing, spreadsheet and database software.

• Proven track record of successful event planning.
• Willingness to travel and to work nights and weekends.

• Demonstrated experience and commitment to working with diverse stakeholders.

Work Hours: Normal office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with some nights and weekends.
