Editorial Production Specialist
The University of Pittsburgh is seeking an Editorial Production Specialist for the Office of University Communications. This position is an important part of the University’s media relations team and will support the production of two of the University’s digital news publications: Pittwire, which showcases the most interesting and important stories from Pitt to an external audience, and @Pitt, an internal communications website and email specifically for faculty and staff audiences.


The incumbent will be responsible for completing final editing/proofreading duties to content for Pittwire and @Pitt, publishing through the University’s content management system, Drupal, and producing both email newsletters using the University’s enterprise-level email platform, Campaign Monitor. Additionally, this position will assist in the preparation, proofreading, and production of University press releases, including publishing to news.pitt.edu and distributing to media through a newswire service. The incumbent will also serve as a back-up editor and final proofreader for various media relations materials as needed, including morning media reports and other internal and digital communications.


The incumbent will:
- Collaborate with members of the media relations team to ensure that final text and other digital assets including photos and video are populated in Drupal, Campaign Monitor and the newswire service on deadline.
- Conduct final proofreading duties on all Pittwire, @Pitt and press release content and suggest revisions, such as changing words and rearranging sentences and paragraphs to improve clarity or accuracy.
- Correct for errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar before publishing to University news websites and sending out e-newsletters.
- Manage final production review protocols with the media relations team.
- Assist with other duties as requested.


Required experience:
- Superb writing and editing skills, including excellent knowledge of the Associated Press Stylebook.
- Experience with modern web-based content management systems (Drupal).
- Working knowledge of graphic design (Photoshop) is a plus. Candidates will ideally bring a combination of copywriting and graphic design to this position.
- Experience with provided software including Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and web-based project management tools (Box and Asana).
- Familiarity with Web traffic analytics is a plus.
- Experience in a news, media or communications organization is a plus.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills, a sense of humor and the ability to work well with others.
- Candidates should be able to effectively articulate problems that arise.


Candidates should be used to working on deadline and as part of a fast-paced and diverse professional team. All qualified applicants selected for an interview will be asked to complete an editing test. This position reports to the Managing Editor of Pittwire and the Director of Internal Communications.

Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, or related areas of study is required; experience in communications, media or public relations is a plus.
