Instructional Designer
The University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Teaching and Learning (Teaching Center) is seeking a highly motivated individual who is passionate about teaching and learning to partner with our faculty in a professional staff position. The job requires a combination of skills in instructional design, faculty development, and instructional technology. The Teaching and Learning Consultant is responsible for collaborating with faculty, teaching assistants and with colleagues in the Teaching Center on the design and development of courses and instructional materials for classroom-based, online and hybrid courses.
 
 
 
The Consultant will also work with individuals to analyze current teaching practices and make recommendations for improvement and will conduct workshops on topics related to teaching. Job duties include: consulting with faculty and/or teaching assistants; designing traditional, hybrid and online instructional materials; managing instructional design projects; preparing written materials for online publication; collaborating with instructional technologists; conducting formative evaluations; and offering workshops or training on teaching methods and/or the effective uses of technology. 
 
 
 
The primary job duties of a Teaching Consultant are highly varied; however, the work tends to center around the theme of improving teaching and learning outcomes across the institution. This happens through a variety of projects, programs, and offerings including but not limited to: consultations, classroom observations, teaching evaluation analysis, workshops, needs analysis, instructional technology, communication, project management, facilitation, research, assessment and event management. Experience with a learning management system (such as Blackboard) is critical, as is the demonstrated ability to effectively use typical instructional technologies. A master’s degree is required; however, a Ph.D. is preferred. If you hold only a masters, it must be in instructional design and/or instructional technology or a closely related field, typically in Education (Ed Psych, Curriculum and Instruction, etc.). Ph.D. candidates who meet the minimum required experience may hold a degree in any field. A minimum of five years’ experience in faculty development (in higher education), organizational improvement (in higher education), or face-to-face instructional design (in higher education) is required. Seven years is preferred. Experience must be in an accredited public or private institution.
