Unit Manager - Sowell Collection
Position Description :

Manages a unit within a department. Plans, organizes and develops goals and procedures for the unit. Represents the unit to administrators, outside agencies and others on relevant matters. Supervises subordinate staff.

Major/Essential Functions :

- Collects manuscript materials, assists with travel and transport of collections, creates publicity and presentations including web information.
- Supervises staff and student assistants in Sowell area.
- Leads and coordinates the work of others in special processing of manuscript collections, including born-digital items. Includes collection arrangement and description and creation of EAD.
- Assists with Sowell Collection and Rare Books websites by posting relevant collection information for researchers. Serves as content provider for the website.
- Assists librarian with outreach and community engagement activities with special projects such as conferences, relevant lectures, book discussions, exhibits, and social media.
- Assists the librarian with coordinating collecting, including reporting collecting activity, following up on donations and/or possible contacts for donations and acquisitions.
- Coordinates with SWC/SCL registrar on records pertaining to collection donations and accessions.
- Serves as a representative for the Sowell Collection in acquiring collections.
- Catalogs books and other items for the Sowell Collection and the Rare Books unit. Exports bibliographic records to ALMA and adds item and holding records.

Occasional Duties :

Required Qualifications :

Bachelor's degree plus three years supervisory experience; OR a combination of education and/or supervisory experience to equal seven years.

Preferred Qualifications :

- MA in English or related field.
- Archival and/or library experience.
- Experience in creating finding aids for archival collections.
- Experience in complex copy cataloging and creating original records.
- Experience editing bibliographic records and creating an item and holding records in an integrated library system.
- Experience using ALMA. Knowledge of archival principles and procedures.
- High level of proficiency with computers, word processing, and data base programs, and social media.
- Ability to communicate very well and in a collegial, courteous, and attentive manner (Service Plus) with co-workers and donors.
