Job Purpose
Towson University is accepting applications for a Degree Advising Specialist. This position in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences will serve as a transfer-student transition advisor for students in Computer Science, Information Systems, and Information Technology at both the main campus and Towson University Northeast (TUNE) campus. The ideal candidate will be committed to student success through superior academic advising, excellent communication skills as well as a high-level of organizational skills.

Work with a caseload of 250+ undergraduate advisees consisting of new transfer students and TUNE campus transfer students. The position will assist students on a regular basis with course selection and degree plan creation; respond to advising-related questions in-person, phone, and email; maintain confidential student files; utilize PeopleSoft and Student Success Center platforms to record student notes; work with the Transfer Center and Transfer Center advisors to answer program and transfer evaluation questions; process transfer evaluations; attend advising sessions at transfer orientation during winter and summer; work with Admissions to correct transfer equivalencies and update TES system; provide referrals to other campus and community resources; address student issues and concerns. The position will work closely with the Department Student Services Coordinator on complex advising cases.

The position additionally requires a portion of time to be spent on the TUNE campus located in Harford County (up to two days per week). The individual will interact with and advise prospective students regarding transfer courses and program requirements in conjunction with TUNE Academic Program Coordinator and TUNE Transfer Admissions; coordinate with TUNE administration; advise 40-50+ TUNE campus Information Technology majors; and attend 4 transfer orientation/advising sessions each year.

Bachelor's degree and two years of advising experience at an institution of higher education (community college or four-year institution). The ability to work with current and prospective students; the ability to quickly learn and accurately convey advising and degree requirements; strong organizational skills; the ability to work as a team and handle multiple commitments; have excellent communication skills; experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook; and knowledge of PeopleSoft student information system or similar system. Travel required to TUNE campus and community colleges for advising, transfer orientation, and information sessions.

Experience advising STEM or computing students; Master’s degree; and the ability to make presentations to a large group of people.
