Dean, School of Education
The University of South Dakota invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the School of Education. The Dean will report to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and act as the chief academic and administrative officer of the School. The Dean is responsible for providing the leadership and vision necessary for setting strategic, operational, and financial directions for all areas of the School and has the overall responsibilities for developing an effective collegial environment that promotes excellence in teaching, research and service, as well as participating in the setting of the University goals and policies. The Dean will work closely with other campus deans and senior administrators and must be an innovative and dynamic advocate for the School and its programs among diverse groups of education, business, government, and community leaders, as well as with the general public.

Founded in 1862 on the banks of the Missouri River in Vermillion, South Dakota, USD is the state’s flagship institution and its designated liberal arts university. With an enrollment exceeding 10,000 students and employing more than 400 faculty members, USD has a strong commitment to student outcomes and success. The School’s programs and courses are designed to meet the needs of teachers, supervisors, counselors, administrators, and other personnel who are directly concerned with the education, health and well-being of P12 students and their families. The programs are organized into five divisions: Counseling and Psychology, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, Kinesiology and Sport Management, and Teacher Residency and Education.

The successful candidate must have an earned doctorate from an accredited university in a discipline appropriate to the School of Education. Preference will be given to candidates who can provide evidence of the following in their application materials: a record of teaching, research, publication, grant success and service suitable for appointment to the rank of full professor; achievement in leading academic programs; success in mentoring faculty; experience in personnel and fiscal management; skill in securing external funding from government, corporate, and private sources; commitment to supporting student, faculty, and staff diversity; skill in building K-12 partnerships; successful experience with state-level licensure bodies and regional and CAEP accreditation and a vision and passion for education. Other highly desirable qualities include a demonstrated ability to work collegially and take initiative; excellent skills in written and oral communication and in building relationships; and the ability to work collaboratively with academic and administrative leaders, faculty, and staff to deliver academic programs of the highest quality both on and off campus.
