SUMMARY:
The Digital Project Manager ensures the school’s continued success in its digital communications, including project managing ongoing development of the GSD’s primary public website, www.gsd.harvard.edu; the ongoing development of new features and enhancements for that site; and ongoing development of new web projects in support of the School’s communications goals.

A critical component of the Digital Project Manager’s role is marshalling forward a wide range of expertise in web development, art direction and graphic design, and digital content creation in order to meet project deadlines and objectives. As required on a project basis, the Digital Project Manager will manage work across diverse and changing teams of internal colleagues and external designers, developers, and agencies. The Digital Project Manager will work closely with the School’s internal web development team, helping to establish their priorities and short- and long-term goals and working with them to translate new projects to technical specs. The Digital Project Manager will also collaborate closely with other colleagues in the Office of Communications, in particular the School’s art director.

An equally vital part of the Digital Project Manager’s role is that they also serve as the main point of contact for web editors across the School who regularly update and contribute to the School’s websites and other digital projects. The GSD’s web infrastructure is an enormous and complex environment that requires clear and regular communication with this group of web editors in order to keep all sites current and effectively informative. Toward that end, it is vital that the person who fills this position have strong project management skills and an enthusiasm for collaborating with colleagues of varying levels of expertise, and be able to translate technical and aesthetic requirements and other project needs clearly and appropriately. The Digital Project Manager is responsible for responding to requests for support, reports of errors or bugs, and requests for site enhancements, among other inquiries, and for providing new and existing web editors with training in the school’s CMS. Establishing a clear set of guidelines, protocols, and documentation, as well as a regular rhythm of communication with this group will be an important part of supporting the success of the GSD’s overall web presence.

Over the next year, the GSD also will be releasing a handful of significant new web projects, including a new Wordpress-based toolkit for new GSD-branded websites, as well as a new website undertaken at this time when all teaching and learning is happening virtually, one that offers a real-time dashboard of all activities happening across the school at any given time as well as collaborative space for students currently living and learning around the world. In the coming months, the GSD also expects to undertake the creation of a new primary website for the school, as a major part of the overall development and implementation of a new visual identity for the school. The Digital Project Manager will play a leading role in all of these projects.

Lastly, it is important that the Digital Project Manager have an active and eager interest in exploring new technologies and their potential, and will be expected to be a contributing member of the school’s Digital Governance Committee.
This role reports to the Assistant Dean and Director of Communications and Public Programs.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Steers forward ongoing development of the GSD’s primary public website, www.gsd.harvard.edu, the ongoing development of new features and enhancements for that site, and ongoing development of new web projects in support of the School’s communications goals.
• Must be effectively fluent in and able to marshall forward a wide range of expertise in web development, art direction and graphic design, and digital content creation in order to meet project deadlines and objectives.
• Will establish short- and long-term priorities and workflow for the school’s web development team, as they relate to the school’s websites.
• Provides project management for a range of projects: attends meetings, manages documentation and communications, creates and maintains project schedules and budgets, uses standard and evolving project management conventions, tools, and technologies as needed.
• Collaborates with the school’s development team to ensure that the school’s websites are compliant with appropriate web standards, in particular Harvard’s policies related to digital accessibility and security.
• Collaborates closely with other colleagues in the Office of Communications, in particular the art director.
• Serves as main point-of-contact for web editors from across the school who regularly update and contribute to the School’s primary website, responding to requests for support, reports of errors or bugs, and requests for site enhancements, among other inquiries, and for providing new and existing web editors with training in the school’s CMS.
• Responsible for establishing a clear set of guidelines, protocols, and documentation, as well as a regular rhythm of communication with the school’s distributed team of web editors, in order to support the success of the GSD’s overall web presence.
• Serves as the School’s primary consultant for staff and faculty on the development of new GSD-branded websites and web-based projects, including assisting in or advising on planning for their ongoing management, and occasionally leading their creation.
• Identifies, assembles, and manages teams of external designers, web developers, and other vendors, as needed.
• Provides search-engine optimization guidance.
• Oversees performance analytics for the website, including reports from Google Analytics and Algolia, and shares key data with stakeholders.
• Performs other job-related responsibilities as needed

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree required, with 4+ years related work in project managing web-based projects of increasing size and complexity and involving multiple stakeholders.
• Experience with standard project management tools, including online collaboration systems; experience with agile development workflow preferred.
• Must have significant experience in Wordpress and either experience using other CMSs or an eager interest in learning, implementing, and working in other CMSs.
• Knowledgeable of current best practices and trends in search-engine optimization and Google Analytics.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
• UX/UI experience a plus.
• Must have an active and eager interest in exploring new and experimental technologies and their potential for digital communications in a design-forward institutional environment.
• High attention to detail required.
• Must always be able to exercise sound judgement.
• Must be able to show discretion when working with confidential information.
• Must be able to work independently and be enthusiastic, respectful, and diplomatic about engaging with and across groups of highly ambitious individuals operating near or at the tops of their professions.
