Many of the most pressing issues facing modern society are social and behavioral problems. Poverty, health behavior change, globalization, food insecurity, lost human capital, and fast-paced technological innovation are challenges that are, at their core, social and behavioral science issues. The Center for Social and Behavioral Science (CSBS) was created to help address some of the grand challenges facing society that can be answered using the deep social and behavioral science expertise housed at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In particular, the CSBS will focus on three grand challenges 1) solving poverty, 2) understanding the effect of technology on society, and 3) the role of social and behavioral factors in health. Since these grand challenges cut across many different colleges and departments, the CSBS will foster interdisciplinary research teams that harness the complementary strengths of the Illinois faculty. The CSBS will also serve as a point of contact for community and national groups that will enable them to take advantage of the vast social and behavioral science expertise at the University of Illinois. Finally, the CSBS will serve the social and behavioral science community by delivering training opportunities for researchers and by providing institutional infrastructure to help social and behavioral scientists conduct high impact, important research.

The position will focus on the Social and Behavioral Sciences and the digital revolution grand theme within the Center for Social and Behavioral Science (CSBS). The digital revolution grand theme leverages social and behavioral scientists at the University of Illinois to understand the effect of technology on society. It addresses research related to, for example, social science and data science, social science and sensors, and the social science of engineering.

Position Focus: Responsibilities of the research development manager will include identifying, expanding, and supporting new research initiatives involving campus faculty and external stakeholders; coordinating new, multi-disciplinary, multi-investigator proposals; and working to build the research capacity and external funding of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In addition, this position will provide support to new research centers related to social and behavioral science and the digital revolution research areas.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Collaborate with faculty members across disciplines in catalyzing new research programs and opportunities
Plan, assemble, direct, and facilitate collaborative teams with university faculty and external stakeholders; provide faculty members with elements of research planning to help faculty to strategically approach research and funding opportunities
Coordinate the preparation of funding agency proposal submissions by interdisciplinary teams
Identify common and complementary research interests among multidisciplinary faculty and assemble teams to address research and funding opportunities
Identify and facilitate workshops and meetings of interested parties in the area of social and behavioral sciences and the digital revolution
Analyze, align, and strategically match organizational strengths with short term emphases and long-term directions of funding agencies Track active and upcoming solicitations and programs from funding agencies, such as NSF and NIH
Maintain information on proposal preparation requirements for relevant federal, state, local sponsors, private foundations and industry partners
Manage other programmatic activities within the digital revolution grand theme such as the CSBS small grant program


Position Requirements and Qualifications:

Education - Required: MS in a technical discipline. Preferred: PhD in a technical discipline (social or behavioral science, engineering or technology) or equivalent training.

Experience - Required: Minimum of 3-5 years of direct experience working with research faculty and managing large projects. Preferred: Demonstrated experience with writing and/or preparing technical white papers, contract/grant proposals, and technical presentations; experience in managing large multi-investigator federally funded projects. technical background in data science.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Required: Demonstrated knowledge of programs, policies and procedures of external funding agencies; excellent interpersonal, communication, computer, and organization skills. Preferred: Expertise in the social and behavioral science area; knowledge of research in the digital revolution grand theme.

Proposed Start Date: As soon as possible after closing date.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Appointment Status: FLSA exempt, 100%-time Academic Professional position, 12-month service basis renewable annually pending success within the position.
