Assistant Professor of Music & Director
The University of Southern Maine School of Music seeks a full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor of Music—Director of Bands to start in the fall of 2021. The successful candidate will provide vision and leadership for all aspects of the University of Southern Maine band program. Teaching responsibilities will include conducting the University Concert Band, other wind ensembles and teaching conducting. Other teaching duties that match the candidate's qualifications, background, and interests as well as the needs of the School of Music may be assigned. The Director of Bands is expected to provide leadership in recruiting outstanding students to the music program and to maintain active and collaborative relationships with public school and community band programs throughout the state of Maine and beyond. The Director of Bands will promote collaborative relationships among the brass, woodwind and percussion faculty. Sustained involvement in professional growth beyond the university is expected, as is participation in faculty committees and governance.

A unit of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, the School of Music, with a full-time faculty of 8 and part-time faculty of 39, serves approximately 160 music majors in three undergraduate programs: music education, music performance, and liberal arts; and a master’s degree program that includes majors in conducting, performance, music education and other areas of specialization. The School of Music is a signature program at the University of Southern Maine. With significant philanthropic support, USM has made a new Center for the Arts a centerpiece of its upcoming Capital Campaign.

The School actively contributes to USM’s general education curriculum for all students and maintains numerous partnerships with professional performing arts organizations in the region. USM has a robust youth music program that serves over 200 pre-college students, including summer music academies and the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble, a select group. USM values community engagement and seeks a person who will be a regional leader in instrumental music.

Required Qualifications:
Doctorate in conducting, music education, or performance, by time of appointment. We welcome candidates who are currently full-time faculty at other institutions who may be qualified for credit towards tenure. Applicants who are ABD and those who have made significant progress toward a terminal degree in music will also be considered. Degree completion by June 1, 2022, is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
The successful candidate will possess conducting abilities of the highest artistic standard; a comprehensive knowledge of wind band repertoire; effective and productive rehearsal techniques and excellent pedagogical skills. Preference will be given to candidates who have one or more additional areas of expertise in college-level music instruction; particular preference will be given to candidates whose areas of expertise include music education and/or brass. The successful candidate will have experience directing a band in a K-12 setting and an ongoing commitment to advancing the profession. The successful candidate should have demonstrated abilities in recruiting and retaining students, be in demand as an adjudicator and/or clinician, and possess superior administrative skills. An established record of commitment to university, public school, and community collaborations is desired.
