Dept Marketing Statement
Part of UCSC's Office of Research, the Office of Research Development (RD) is a growing, service-oriented team dedicated to the vision of advancing social good through a radical and empowered research community. The RD team supports the research enterprise across UCSC divisions by helping researchers to develop concepts, funding strategies, and teams; identify and evaluate funding opportunities; and prepare competitive proposals. RD staff work together to promote cross-campus research communications, facilitate collaborations with other institutions, conduct workshops and training, promote equity in the research enterprise, and perform portfolio analyses. They develop resources to streamline proposal development and work directly with the Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP), other Office of Research units, Foundation Relations, divisional staff, and others to enhance the quality, timeliness, and competitiveness of UCSC proposals. Additionally, the Office of Research Development develops and supports strategic initiatives to increase funding, visibility, and engagement, including through seed funding, symposia, program officer visits, and structured programs focused on high-priority opportunities.

Job Overview

Housed within the Office of Research, this Research Development (RD) Specialist supports the general domain of Environmental research. Environmental research at UCSC spans two academic divisions: Physical and Biological Sciences (Environmental Sciences) and Social Sciences (Environmental Studies). The Research Development Specialist will serve as a liaison to both of these divisions.

Support for environmental researchers will reflect divisional and departmental priorities and may include outreach; opportunity scouting and evaluation; near and long-term positioning and strategy development; team building; proposal planning, coordination, and development support; capacity building; and communicating priorities and support requirements to other RD staff. Depending on the scope and context of extramural funding opportunities, Research Development Specialists may collaborate to support large cross-divisional or multi-institutional initiatives, or training and education grants. Research Development Specialists work as part of a team to provide consistent support for UCSC researchers across divisions and are expected to contribute to campus-wide RD programs, resource and process development, and strategic planning. The Specialist may be asked to lead specific programs relevant to their doman, interests, and skills.

The ideal candidate will have a strong research background, fluency and enthusiasm for research development, and detailed knowledge of the academic funding enterprise. Successful candidates will be detail-oriented, self-motivated individuals with excellent skills in grant and technical writing, project management, and facilitation. Experience developing and maintaining online resources and tools is also desirable. Specialists should have an advanced degree (or equivalent experience/training) and demonstrated expertise in writing competitive research proposals relevant to the scope of the UCSC research portfolio.
