Job Description Summary

Penn Law recently concluded a comprehensive campaign, raising $280 million, which was designed to promote and support the school’s most critical needs and priorities, including scholarship, faculty support, and the growth of our centers and institutes.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Development, the Assistant Director of Development is both a junior gift officer and a strategic partner for frontline staff on the development team. The Assistant Director has direct and primary responsibility for identifying and qualifying major and planned gift donors, including previously unaffiliated prospective donors who may have interest in the Law School’s centers and institutes. As a first development contact for many alumni and friends, the Assistant Director will play the crucial role of conveying the impact and possibilities of philanthropy at Penn Law to prospects who have not yet engaged with the Law School.

Job Description

Responsibilities Include:

Centers & Institutes:

- Develop funding support for subject-oriented centers and institutes such as the Quattrone Center for the Fair Administration of Justice and the Center for Technology, Innovation, and Competition.
- Initiate strategies to attract donors from outside the established Penn Law community to these gift opportunities, including individual, corporate and foundational donors.
- Interface with center directors and faculty to identify needs and funding opportunities.
- In partnership with the Executive Director, support the centers’ fundraising objectives and provide guidance and advice on ways to move their programs forward through philanthropy.
- Represent the Development Office by attending Center events and activities.
- Engage with existing and potential donors and volunteer leaders to help manage and deepen their involvement with these priorities.
- Build partnerships across a wide variety of stakeholders within central development and create strategies to identify new donors while maximizing their giving potential.

Donor Identification and Pipeline Development:

- Collaborate with Prospect Management Staff and Executive Director to develop outreach and qualification strategies for a pool of prospects to identify new major gift prospects and inform next steps for major gift officers and the Director of Annual Giving.
- Meet with prospects, mainly via video conference and phone, to qualify their ability to make a major gift. Visits may expand over time to include local and national travel for in-person qualification visits.
- Solicit for leadership annual gifts and/or planned gifts when appropriate.
- Coordinate with the Executive Director to transfer prospects to major gifts staff as appropriate.

Prospect Management Strategy & Support:

- Respond to inquiries regarding gift and involvement opportunities and determine appropriate follow-up.
- Partner with Prospect Management and Research to manage both the Law School internal pipeline and our presence on the University Pipeline.
- Assist with strategy development for individual prospects across the Development Team.

Other Duties as Assigned

Qualifications:

BA/BS required
Minimum 3 to 5 years experience in development (or related field) or equivalent combination of education and experience required
JD a plus, but not a requirement
Outstanding written and oral communications skills.
Ability to organize tasks and priorities, and to work with minimal supervision.
Must be able to work independently, but also collaboratively, as part of a goal-oriented team
Demonstrated success in program management.
Occasional overnight travel and some evening and weekend work.
